Squares of Shingles Calculator
This calculator converts roof area into squares — the standard 100-sq-ft unit roofing material is ordered in — using squares = area ÷ 100, plus an adjustable waste factor for the amount to actually buy.

How it works
A "square" is simply 100 square feet of roof surface — a unit that predates this calculator by decades and is still how every shingle, metal panel, and underlayment product is priced and packaged.
squares = roofArea ÷ 100 · squaresToOrder = squares × (1 + waste%)
If you already know your roof's true (sloped) area, enter it directly. If you only know the building's footprint, switch to "Calculate from footprint" — it applies the same slope-factor correction used across every geometry calculator on this site.
Worked example
A 2,400 sq ft roof, ordering with a 12% waste factor for a moderately cut-up roof line.
Exact squares. 2,400 ÷ 100 = 24 squares.
Squares to order. 24 × 1.12 = 26.88 squares, rounded up to 27 squares for ordering.
Tips from the field
- Always round the final square count up, not down — suppliers sell in whole bundles and units.
- Increase the waste factor for roofs with many hips, valleys, or dormers — those add cutting waste well beyond a simple gable roof's 10%.
- Keep the exact (no-waste) squares number on hand too — it's useful for comparing quotes that may build waste in differently.
- If a supplier quotes "squares" that don't match this calculator, confirm whether their number already includes waste.
What this tool does not do
- Does not calculate bundle count for a specific shingle product — use the Shingle Calculator for bundles, nails, and starter/ridge coverage.
- Does not account for overhang or roof type in its footprint mode — use the Roof Square Footage Calculator for that level of detail.
- Does not price the material — squares are a quantity, not a cost estimate.
To convert squares into an actual bundle and nail count, see the Shingle Calculator. For a detailed footprint-based area with overhang, see the Roof Square Footage Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
These are the questions that come up when a roof area needs to turn into an actual shingle order — what a square is, and how much extra to buy.
What is a "square" in roofing?
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface — the standard unit roofing materials are packaged, ordered, and priced in, regardless of the actual shingle, panel, or bundle size.
Why 100 square feet specifically?
It is simply the trade's traditional unit, long predating this calculator — every roofer, supplier, and manufacturer spec sheet quotes coverage per square, so estimates and orders can be compared apples-to-apples.
How do I find my roof area if I don't already know it?
Switch this calculator to "Calculate from footprint" and enter your building's length, width, and pitch — it applies the same slope-factor math as the Roof Square Footage Calculator to get a true, sloped area.
Why does the calculator recommend adding a waste factor?
Real roofs have cuts, hips, valleys, and starter/ridge trim that consume more material than the flat square footage suggests. A waste factor accounts for that so you don't run short mid-job.
What waste percentage should I use?
10% is standard for a simple gable roof. Increase to 12-15% for roofs with multiple hips, valleys, or dormers, and consider 15-20%+ for complex, highly cut-up roof lines.
Do squares translate directly to bundles?
Not one-to-one — bundles per square depends on the specific shingle product (commonly 3 bundles per square for architectural shingles, sometimes 4). Use the Shingle Calculator to convert squares into an exact bundle count for your product.
Should I round squares up or down when ordering?
Always round up — suppliers sell in whole bundles, and running short mid-installation costs more in a second delivery than a small amount of extra material.
Does the footprint mode account for overhang?
No — this calculator's footprint mode keeps things simple with length, width, and pitch only. For overhang and roof-type handling, use the Roof Square Footage Calculator and paste its result into "I know my roof area" mode here.
Is squares-of-shingles the same as squares-of-metal or squares-of-underlayment?
The unit (100 sq ft) is the same across all roofing materials, but coverage-per-package and waste factors differ by material — use the Metal Roof Calculator for metal panels specifically.
Why is my contractor's square count higher than this calculator's?
Contractors often build in a larger waste factor for complex roofs, add extra for a specific brand's bundle coverage, or measure from an as-built survey that includes features (dormers, chimneys) this simple calculator doesn't.
Does a steeper roof need more squares for the same footprint?
Yes — a steeper roof has more actual surface area for the same footprint, which is exactly what the "calculate from footprint" mode's slope factor accounts for automatically.
Can I use this calculator for a commercial low-slope roof?
The squares math works the same, but low-slope commercial roofing typically uses membrane or built-up systems priced and packaged differently than residential shingles — check your material's own coverage specification.
