Roofing Calculator
This is the hub calculator: enter your building's footprint, pitch, and material, and get roof area, squares, and an estimated cost range in one pass — then jump to a specialized tool for exact material quantities or a detailed cost breakdown.

This hub gives a fast, rough pass across area and cost. For exact material quantities, use the Shingle, Metal Roof, or Board Foot Calculator; for a detailed cost breakdown, use the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator.
How it works
This hub chains three calculations that each have their own dedicated tool on this site: footprint area (from the Roof Square Footage Calculator), squares conversion (from the Squares of Shingles Calculator), and a cost range (from the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator).
roofArea = footprint × slopeFactor · squares = roofArea ÷ 100 · cost = squares × materialRange
If your roof isn't one simple rectangle, break it into sections with the Roof Area Calculator first, then bring that total area into the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator directly.
Worked example
A 40 ft × 24 ft ranch house, 6/12 pitch, 12" overhang, gable roof, going with architectural shingles.
Roof area. (40+2) × (24+2) × 1.118 = 42 × 26 × 1.118 ≈ 1,221 sq ft (same math as the Roof Square Footage Calculator).
Squares. 1,221 ÷ 100 ≈ 12.2 squares.
Estimated cost. Material + labor (12.2 × $400-$600) plus tear-off (12.2 × $50-$80) plus a typical permit ($100-$500) ≈ $5,990 - $8,320. For an exact bundle count on this area, see the Shingle Calculator.
Every tool on this site
This hub is the fast pass. Here is where to go next depending on what you actually need:
- Roofing takeoff — Shingle Calculator, Metal Roof Calculator, Squares of Shingles Calculator.
- Roof geometry — Roof Square Footage Calculator, Roof Area Calculator, Roof Pitch Calculator, Roof Slope Calculator.
- Framing and lumber — Rafter Length Calculator, Birdsmouth Cut Calculator, Joist Span Calculator, Board Foot Calculator.
- Cost — Roof Replacement Cost Calculator.
Tips from the field
- Use this hub for a first-pass budget conversation, then move to the specialized tools before finalizing an order.
- Confirm pitch on-site with a speed square — it has more effect on both area and cost than any other single input.
- For an irregular roof, resist the urge to force one blended pitch and footprint through this hub — use the Roof Area Calculator for accuracy.
- Treat the cost range as a planning number, not a bid — always get contractor quotes for the actual job.
What this tool does not do
- Does not give exact bundle, panel, or fastener counts — use the Shingle or Metal Roof Calculator for that precision.
- Does not handle multi-section or irregular roofs — use the Roof Area Calculator first.
- Does not replace a contractor quote for cost, or an engineer for structural questions — see the Joist Span Calculator's disclaimer for that distinction.

Frequently asked questions
These are the questions that come up when someone searches "roofing calculator" without knowing yet exactly which number they need — area, materials, cost, or all three.
What does this calculator actually calculate?
It runs a fast pass across three things at once: true roof area from your building's footprint and pitch, the resulting squares, and a planning-grade cost range for your chosen material — the three questions most people searching "roofing calculator" actually have.
Should I use this or one of the specialized calculators?
Start here for a quick, rough pass. Once you know your material and rough numbers, move to the specialized tool for precision — the Shingle Calculator for exact bundle and nail counts, the Metal Roof Calculator for panel counts, or the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator for a detailed cost breakdown.
How is roof area calculated here?
The same way the Roof Square Footage Calculator does it: footprint (length × width, plus overhang on all sides) times the pitch's slope factor. See that calculator for the full geometry breakdown.
Why does changing the material change the cost so much?
Material cost per square varies enormously — from roughly $300-700/square for basic 3-tab shingles to $1,500-3,000/square for premium slate or tile. See the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator for the full published ranges and sources.
Does this calculator handle an irregular, multi-section roof?
Not directly — it assumes one rectangular footprint at one pitch. For an L-shaped house, an attached garage, or a porch at a different pitch, use the Roof Area Calculator to sum sections first, then bring that total area into the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator.
How do I get an exact shingle bundle count from this?
Take the roof area shown here into the Shingle Calculator, which adds exposure, bundles-per-square, waste factor, and nailing pattern for a precise bundle and nail count.
What if I only know my roof's pitch, not the angle or slope percentage?
That's exactly what this calculator expects (x/12 pitch) — if you have a different measurement, convert it first with the Roof Pitch Calculator or Roof Slope Calculator.
Can I use this for framing lumber estimates too?
Not directly for framing quantities — use the Rafter Length Calculator for rafter cuts and counts, or the Board Foot Calculator for general lumber volume.
Does the cost estimate include tear-off of the old roof?
Yes, a single-layer tear-off is included by default in the total shown here. For multi-layer tear-off or a fully itemized breakdown, use the Roof Replacement Cost Calculator directly.
Why is the cost always a range instead of one number?
Because a single number would overstate how precisely a rough hub calculator can price a real job — regional labor rates and contractor pricing vary. Treat this as a planning range, not a quote.
What is the difference between "roof area" and "squares" in the result?
Roof area is in square feet; a square is 100 square feet — the standard unit roofing material is ordered in. Squares = roof area ÷ 100.
Is there a joist span or structural calculator on this site too?
Yes — the Joist Span Calculator and Birdsmouth Cut Calculator cover structural framing questions, separate from this page's roofing takeoff and cost focus.
