How it works
Roofing material is ordered by the square (100 sq ft), but installed shingle by shingle and nail by nail — this calculator bridges both, starting from your roof's true area.
squares = area ÷ 100 · bundles = squares × (1 + waste) × bundlesPerSquare
- Bundles per square — 3 is standard for most architectural shingles (GAF Timberline HDZ); some products are 4 — check your spec sheet.
- Shingles per square — derived from exposure and shingle width, not a fixed number, since it varies by product dimensions.
- Nails — 4 per shingle standard, 6 for high-wind rated installations, per IRC §R905.2.6 and manufacturer instructions.
- Starter strip and ridge cap — shown as linear feet needed, since coverage per bundle varies too much by product for a reliable default (see the FAQ below).
Worked example
A 1,800 sq ft roof, standard architectural shingles (5⅝" exposure, 3 bundles/square), 10% waste, standard 4-nail pattern.
Squares with waste. (1,800 ÷ 100) × 1.10 = 19.8 squares.
Bundles. 19.8 × 3 = 59.4 bundles, round up to 60 bundles.
Shingles per square. 100 ÷ ((5.625 ÷ 12) × (39.375 ÷ 12)) ≈ 65.0 shingles/square.
Total shingles. 19.8 × 65.0 ≈ 1,287 shingles.
Nails. 1,287 × 4 ≈ 5,148 nails.
Tips from the field
- Always confirm bundles-per-square and exposure against your specific product's spec sheet — the defaults here match common architectural shingles, but not every product.
- Order nails by the box, not the exact count — standard coil or strip nail boxes hold a fixed count, so round up to the next full box.
- Increase the waste factor for any roof with multiple hips, valleys, or dormers.
- Buy starter strip and ridge cap from the same product line as your field shingles when possible — color and profile matching matters more than a few dollars of savings.
What this tool does not do
- Does not give a bundle count for starter strip or ridge cap — coverage per bundle varies too much by product; use the linear-footage result with your product's own spec sheet.

These are the questions that come up when a roof area needs to become an actual shingle, nail, and trim order — bundle counts, nailing patterns, and what this calculator deliberately leaves for the product spec sheet.
Why is the default 3 bundles per square?
Most architectural (laminate) asphalt shingles, including GAF Timberline HDZ, are packaged 3 bundles to the square. It is editable because some products — CertainTeed Landmark TL, for instance — are packaged 4 to the square. Check your specific product before ordering.
How does the calculator figure out shingles per square?
From the shingle's exposure and width: shinglesPerSquare = 100 ÷ (exposure × width, in square feet). At the standard 5⅝" exposure and 39⅜" width, that works out to roughly 65 shingles per square.
Why does nailing pattern matter so much?
Nail count scales directly with pattern — switching from 4 nails to 6 nails per shingle (required for high-wind rated installations per manufacturer instructions and IRC §R905.2.6) increases total nails by 50%.
When do I need the 6-nail high-wind pattern instead of standard 4-nail?
When your shingle manufacturer's installation instructions specify it for your wind zone, or when it's required to achieve a specific wind-speed rating on the product (many enhanced wind-rated shingle lines require it). Check your product's instructions — this varies by manufacturer and wind zone.
Why doesn't this calculator give me a bundle count for starter strip or ridge cap?
Because coverage per bundle varies significantly by product and we could not verify one reliable, current figure to publish with confidence. Instead, it gives you the linear footage needed (eave length for starter, ridge + hip length for ridge cap) — divide that by your specific product's stated linear-feet-per-bundle coverage.
What waste percentage should I use?
10% is standard for a simple gable roof. Increase to 12-15% for roofs with several hips or valleys, and consider 15-20%+ for a highly cut-up roof line with dormers or multiple intersecting planes.
Does the waste factor apply to nails too?
Yes — this calculator applies waste to the shingle count first, then calculates nails from that waste-adjusted shingle count, since cut and damaged shingles still typically get nailed during installation.
Can I use this for 3-tab shingles instead of architectural/laminate?
Yes, but confirm the exposure and bundles-per-square for your specific 3-tab product in the Advanced Options — dimensions and packaging can differ from the architectural-shingle defaults.
How do I calculate my roof area if I don't already know it?
Switch to "Calculate from footprint" and enter building length, width, and pitch — it applies the same slope-factor geometry as the Roof Square Footage Calculator.
Should I round the bundle count up?
Yes — always round up to the next whole bundle. Suppliers sell in whole units, and running short mid-job costs more than a small amount of extra material.
Does this calculator account for hip and ridge caps cut from 3-tab shingles instead of a dedicated ridge cap product?
No — it assumes a dedicated ridge cap product measured by linear feet. If you're cutting caps from 3-tab shingles, calculate that separately using the shingle's dimensions and your ridge/hip length.
Why do my numbers differ slightly from a big-box store's online estimator?
Most retail estimators use a fixed, generic shingles-per-square figure rather than deriving it from your specific product's exposure and width — small differences in those two numbers shift the shingle and nail counts.
